“FRIENDS OF BETTY”

In the tradition of Emmanuel College Alumni, the “Friends of Betty” have been meeting monthly for the about 10 years to assist the Development and Alumni office with their various projects. The current group represents alums from the classes of 1943, 1946, 1947 and 1951. They are Jean Connolly Clancy ’47, Mary Cashman Cullin ’46, Dorothea Phair ’46, Lois O’Hara ’51, Mary Cunning Coulon ’46, Joan McAuliffe ’43, Ruth O’Brien White ’47, Elizabeth “Betty” McCarty Grimes ’46 and of course Elisabeth “Betty” O’Hearn ’47 who has been a dedicated and loyal Alum since 1947. Some of the loyal members who are no longer able to attend these monthly gatherings include Margaret “Peggy” Salmon ‘47, Elizabeth “Betty” Mahoney ’45, and Lorraine Harding ’48.

In addition to their volunteer hours at Emmanuel, these women volunteer at the following:

  • Joan McAuliffe ’43 has been volunteering at the Faulkner Hospital Gift Shop since 1984. Joan was recently honored at their annual volunteer luncheon for completing 25 years and 5000 hours of volunteer service. Her dedication to volunteerism continues at the Faulkner Hospital. Joan, also, has volunteered countless hours to Emmanuel College Alumni Association.
  • Mary Cashman Cullin ’46 is Pro Life chairman for 2 parishes.Dorothea Phair ’46 volunteers at Lahey Clinic and bakes bread for Communion at her parish.
  • Lois O’Hara ’51 has volunteered many hours at Emmanuel for many years on the Alumnae Board and many of the alumnae activities.
  • Jean Connolly Clancy ’47 is a member of the choir at St. Theresa Church in West Roxbury.
  • Mary Cunning Coulon ’46 volunteers for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Lyons Club, the Neighborhood Club and makes calls for the Pantry House.
  • Ruth O’Brien White ’47 has been volunteering at the Norwood Hospital for the past five years.
  • Elizabeth “Betty” McCarty Grimes ’46 is a Eucharistic Minister at her parish and drives patients for eye appointments.
  • Elisabeth “Betty” O’Hearn ’47 has been volunteering at Emmanuel since 1947 and has served on the Alumni Board of Directors. She organizes this volunteer group and spends countless hours on the phone calling alums to inquire for their health and that of their families. She, also, assists the Development Office.

This tribute to these women would not be complete if the deceased members of this group were not mentioned – Helen McEttrick Colgan ’41 and M. Rosamond Collins ’47.

These women represent what Emmanuel Alumni have done over the past 90 years for Emmanuel and their communities.
