When I noticed that Adam Brandao, Class of 2004, had already exceeded his 500 hour pledge, I emailed to ask him about what he is doing. Here's what he told me.
"I volunteer for the Civil Air Patrol, the Air Force Auxiliary, which is a para-military organization that deals in youth education (cadet programs), search and rescue, and aerospace education. Their website is: www.gocivilairpatrol.com. In this program I teach ground search and rescue, cadet leadership, and time management skills. It is a natural fit because it is modeled after the Air Force and I am currently on active duty for the Air Force.

The picture on the top right is from a briefing I gave to CAP cadets about serving as an Air Force officer at the 2007 Civil Air Patrol Summer encampment. The encampment is a week-long training session that gives cadets a basic familiarization to the military as well as Civil Air Patrol. It challenges their leadership, followership, and educates them in various related fields.
The picture on the top left is of me with all of the Montana cadets that attended the Regional Cadet Leadership School. It was a week-long course for senior cadets in the program that gave them a chance to try their leadership skills in various challenging settings. It was held this past July at Peterson AFB in Colorado Springs Colorado."
Hope this helps put a face on 90K. If you let us know what you are doing, we will be happy to post your information to the blog.
By the way, Adam didn't start volunteering because of 90K. Last December, he was awarded the military outstanding volunteer service medal for donating more than 1000 hours last year to Civil Air Patrol. Thanks Adam!

Coming back to Emmanuel College as a director at large on the alumni association has given me more opportunities to give back. Over the past two years I have chaired the Red Sox events at the college. The event boasts a dinner upstairs at the Jean Yawkey center, tickets to a game at Fenway and wonderful raffle prizes. Its an event not to be missed and tickets are sold via the website on a first-come, first-serve basis. This is an alumni sponsored event and all the proceeds are given to the campus ministry group at the college. This is one example of volunteerism that I am sure many alums do similar type volunteering who I encourage to continue to add their hours to the website.
We love those Sox events.....keep em coming for 2009!
