Welcome to the 90K...It's All About Time Blog!

To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of Emmanuel College, we asked you to take time to make a difference by raising 90,000 alumni volunteer hours during our anniversary year...and you have!

Over the past several months, I have so enjoyed hearing what you are doing to contribute to 90K. Now, with the launch of the 90K blog, you can share your experiences and ideas with everyone in the Emmanuel community. Please let us know what you are doing to make a difference.

With best wishes,

Opportunities Now at Urban Science Academy

Emmanuel has just heard from Brigetta Johnson that the Urban Science Academy, a Boston public school with a Environment, Technical and Biological Sciences learning theme, http://www.urbansci.com/ is looking for volunteers.

  • The school's Monthly Professionals of Color Guest Speaker series is looking for people to do 3o minute talks or interactive presentations for our students about their background, college experience/education and career, along with a motivational message related to overcoming obstacles present in the life of a student in an urban community. The presentation is followed by a question/answer period.
  • AVID grade 9 and 10 class - AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination http://www.avidonline.org/, is a college readiness class that takes students who are "in the middle" and empowers them with the skills necessary to be successful in a rigorous learning experience (such as the AP course they will take Junior year). It is also about teaching students to believe in themselves and use the group process to achieve goals. Most of the students in the AVID program will be the 1st in their family to go to college. Avid is looking or someone to speak to the class 11:05 - 12:05 (9th grade) and 12:40 - 1:40 (10th grade) on Friday afternoons on a topic like that in the Speakers series above.
  • Avid is also looking for a volunteer tutor on Monday and Wednesdays.

Brigetta can be reached by email at <brigettaj@gmail.com or by phone at 617-279-3430.
